Swimming is incredibly popular in Contra Costa County and our area sent many young men and women to the Olympic trials. The LMYA Swim Team is one of the premier recreational teams in the area with a long and very successful history. It is a fun and excellent way to start your children to learn recreational competitive swimming.
From Gutter Guppies to Teenagers: from Timers to Board members: from Friday Fun Day to the Parents Party, the swim team offers a lot of wonderful camaraderie and is a great place to be in the summer. It is a good place to see old friends and make new ones.
This year the Swim Team has an outstanding group of parents leading the board and a solid group of coaches returning to the team. I want to personally thank each and every parent for his or her volunteer effort in organizing and running the Swim Team. It is the most volunteer intensive sport that LMYA offers and is one of the most rewarding for parents and children alike. A VERY BIG THANK YOU!
Our Swim Program
The main focus of the LMYA Swim program is to teach correct stroke and turn technique. Often, at the Rec. level, time improvements are the result of stroke improvements rather than strength gained from training. The goal is for all Dolphin swimmers to become proficient in all four strokes and turns, and enable each swimmer to understand methods of self-correction while in the water.
A primary focus will be to teach sound workout habits. This involves concentration, attentiveness, effort and discipline. The swimmers will learn how to listen and focus on the coaches' instructions and comments. In this way they will be able to gain the most understanding out of each practice.
The program will also stress that all swimmers enjoy their experience and learn the proper integration of work and play. The program will include activities that are non-athletic in setting, and will be supportive of other activities such as soccer, baseball, school functions, etc. We want this to be a positive and memorable experience for all swimmers on the team.
A child should be able to swim one length of a 25-yard pool WITHOUT using the lane ropes for support before considering swim team membership.
The distance your child will swim will depend upon their age group. Please refer to the following chart:
- 6 & under: swim 25-yds events only
- 7 & 8's: swim 25 yds, plus 100-yard I.M. events
- 9 & 10's: swim 50 yds, plus 100-yard I.M. events
- 11 & 12's: swim 50 yds, plus 100-yard I.M. events
- 13 & 14's: swim 50 yds, plus 100-yard I.M. events
- 15 thru 18: swim 50 or 100 yds all strokes, plus 100-yd I.M. events
